PSP Firmware Upgrades & Downgrades

Author: Stewart Cockburn

Like all cell phones, computers and game consoles, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) runs on an operating system known as firmware. The PSP firmware serves as a foundation on which games and media playback software can be installed. Every once in a while, Sony releases a new firmware for PSP users. The new firmware usually contains new security, gaming and media features. Upgrading your PSP’s firmware is the easiest and fastest way to “pimp up” our PSP game console.

There are many ways to update your firmware. One of the easiest ways is to download the new firmware directly to your PSP through a wi-fi connection. You could also download the new data into your PC first before transferring it to your PSP through USB or storage card.

When downloading the new firmware, be sure to download according to the region where your PSP was bought. The same model of PSP bought in different parts of the world requires different versions of firmware thus it is highly recommended that you download the correct version. After downloading the correct firmware, be sure to store it in the right location on your PSP. The updating process cannot be initiated if it is stored in a wrong location. As the configuration of different PSP models are different, refer to the manual for the correct storage folder. Also, do make sure that you have at least 20MB of space. If the power point is not plugged in, make sure that your PSP’s battery is fully charged. An installation process that is suddenly interrupted may cause some irreversible damage. The process may seem a little daunting at first, but you will quickly get a hang of it after a the first try.

Rushing to update your firmware every time there is a new version may not always be a good idea. This is especially true if you are playing many games that are downloaded from the internet. Because new versions of firmware often comes with heightened security features, some PSP users found that they were unable to play their downloaded games after they have updated the firmware. For this reason, many PSP users do not update their firmware, and sometimes even downgrade their firmware so that they can play downloaded games. Version 1.5 and 1.0 are some of the more popular older versions of PSP firmware.

Before you attempt to downgrade your PSP’s firmware, do remember that this process can terminate your PSP’s warranty. Sometimes, if it is not carried out properly, downgrades can crash your PSP permanently. The first thing to do is to determine the version of your current firmware. After that, do some research on which version of firmware that you wish to downgrade to. Some older firmware versions do not support certain new applications, so do be meticulous in selecting older versions.

Downgrading your PSP’s firmware is a totally legal. Carry out ample research before you attempt to perform the downgrade. If you are unsure, do consult some more experienced gamers or refer to your dealer to get some assistance.
